City Brain

2023

In Hangzhou, China, the city's "Smart Brain," designed to optimize urban planning through data-driven and technocratic methods, has ironically become a counterproductive "brain clot," struggling with poorly coordinated traffic signals and inconsistent lane allocations. I've deconstructed this flawed system into four distinct layers: Urban, Sensory, Cloud, and Management. Through experimental visualizations, I objectively demonstrate how data is collected, utilized, and processed across these layers. Additionally, a complex circuit, composed of four layers of sensors and microcontrollers, illuminates a pentagonal LED light at the top as a satirical commentary on the formalism and nihilism in the city's data collection efforts. This serves to highlight the severe power imbalance between individual citizens and the city's data infrastructure.
