2024By 2040, data computing—like devices, internet use, and supporting systems—could cause 14% of global carbon emissions, which may make stratocumulus clouds disappear in the future. This shows the problem behind the romanticized idea of the “cloud” in cyber culture: a metaphor that hides its environmental footprint, such as massive energy-consuming data centers.
The project uses mobile AR to replace natural clouds with virtual ones that change based on real-time weather and carbon data, representing the disappearance of real clouds. This shift creates a link between natural and digital “clouds,” making people think about the fragile state of nature and the hidden costs of technology.
